Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485
Seems that some south American cinnamon producers are adding lead to their product to increase its weight since it is sold buy the pound. https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-takes-steps-ensure-safety-cinnamon-products-sold-us

Subdeacon Joe
https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-elevated-lead-chromium-levels-cinnamon-applesauce-pouches-november-2023 FDA has confirmed that the lead and chromium previously detected in the cinnamon are from lead chromate. People who ate recalled products, especially if they had elevated blood lead levels, may have been exposed to chromium and should inform their healthcare provider so they can monitor health and provide supportive care, as needed. Healthcare providers can refer to CDC’s Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA Now) announcement for information for additional guidance. Historically, lead chromate has been illegally added to certain spices increase to their weight and enhance their color, which increases the monetary value of the adulterated spices. FDA’s leading hypothesis remains that this was likely an act of economically motivated adulteration. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/06/health/ground-cinnamon-lead-fda/index.html The brands are: La Fiesta, lot 25033, sold at La Superior SuperMercados Marcum, best by 10/16/25 and 4/06/25, sold at Save A Lot MTCI, sold at SF Supermarket Swad, lot KX21223, sold at Patel Brothers Supreme Tradition, best buy dates from 4/25 through 9/25, sold at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar El Chillar, F275EX1026 and D300EX1024, sold at La Joya Morelense in Baltimore, Maryland The concentrations of lead in the ground cinnamon products ranged from 2 to 3.4 parts per million, according to the FDA; the concentrations of lead found in the cinnamon applesauce pouches were thousands of times higher: between about 2,300 parts per million and about 5,100 parts per million. ================= 5100ppm is 0.51%, a not insignificant increase in weight when talking about tons of product sold. I do have to wonder how most of the recalled product is under 5 ppm but that cinnamon applesauce is over 3000 ppm in the finished product.
