Loading the 38-56 Winchester

Recommended Posts

Hi:

Anyone know where I can get smokeless loads using cast bullets (Other than Load Data) for the .38-56 WCF?

Thanks,

Cat

I’ve shot a lot of 38-55 with Unique. 9.6 grns with a 245 grn bullet in lever, 10.0 with a 260 grn bullet in HiWall.

“The handloaders manual of cartridge conversions” list 38-56 Winchester with 25 grains of IMR 4198 under a 250gr lead bullet.

Couldn’t find data in any other manual I possess.

I have some load data. I will try to look it up later today and post it for you. I found that some of the posted loa.ds listed as accurate really weren't. I had one load that would shoot just over 2" at 200 yds with a peep site, I will post it I can find it.

If you can find some Trail Boss.

Unique 9.0 Gr.

2400 18.0 Gr.

IMR 4227 21.0 Gr.

What bullet with these powders?

I have a 5 LB container of TrailBoss.

250, you can use a heavier bullet. Or lighter one.

If you can find a Gas Check bullet, they work well in older Firearms.

I have molds ranging from 232 grains to 340 grains.

In 38-56 if you go much beyond a 260g bullet it will extend well down into the case below the bottle neck or if left out so it does not it will not feed in a lever rifle as it will probably be too long.
