Subdeacon Joe
From the Book of Face: Museum of Artifacts A note from the year 1436 identifies the owner of this sapphire ring as Duke Ernest the Iron (1377–1424 CE). This makes it the oldest, unequivocally attributable object inventoried among the medieval treasures of the House of Habsburg. Alpo
My understanding is sapphire is harder than diamond. I wonder how they drilled it.

Nope, sapphire is 9 on the Mohs scale, diamond is 10. Sapphires and rubies are tougher than diamonds, less prone to breaking, chipping, and cracking.
