Rufus Calhoun
I have a Davide Pedersoli Sharps rifle with some type of clear coat applied to the receiver. It is coming off in multiple small areas. Is there a way to remove the clear coat without damaging the case hardening underneath? Thanks in advance. Rufus
Doc Fill 'Em 67797
I would think acetone would remove the clear coat and not affect the case hardening. Try it on a Q-Tip in a small area first.
Reverend P. Babcock Chase
Howdy Rufus, I believe it has been common to have some form of finish over real color case hardening to protect the attractive colors. Once you remove the current finish, you may want to explore what type of protective finish is appropriate. FYI Rev. Chase
J.D. Daily
If the clear coat is the same as that used on the Beretta Gold Rush, Rem Oil will remove it & the finish on the stock. Years ago I found out the hard way.
Rufus Calhoun
Just a short update. The acitone works well with just a little rubbing. Now I'm finding surface rust under the pox marks and squiggles. Moisture must have snuck its way under the clear coat and set up camp. I'm thinking a light rubbing with some steel wool and a good oiling will take care of the rust squatters. Rufus

Yes it is a pun, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. The bronze wool is far less damaging to your finish.
Rufus Calhoun
The bronze woll is coming. Thanks!
Johnny Knight
So, when are you going to get out to shoot that gun? Lmk, I need to put some rounds through the 38-55. Johnny
Rufus Calhoun
I haven't really planned when to shoot the Sharps. I need to install the new front sight or it will be a big guessing game. Been spending more time slicking up the twice-barrel-shoots-gun...
