Subdeacon Joe
Our late priest was there for those festivities. He told a story of, when it looked like the base he was at was in danger of being overrun, his CO saying, "Padre, you need to get yourself a rifle just in case.". Father M. refused, but said he did go to the mess and get a kitchen knife. He figured that if it was that close he could justify taking a life. He still would have been defrocked, but would still be alive. I think he got his first Bronze Star in that action.

Duffield, SASS #23454
I had a scary night then,, but the ARVN compound next to us was their primary target. In the morning we flex to Can Tho and the ponds between the runway and the ramp were covered by bodies completely. Next we flew to MI Tho and the entire town was burned to cinders. My gunner and I had been awake all night and we didn't get out of our helicopter for T he next 72 hours, except to eat and relieve ourselves. Itt was one heck of a New Year celebration.
