Forty Rod SASS 3935

Recommended Posts

My Colt detective special is amid 1900s vintage gun.  Can I safely shoot something long the lines of Hornady Extreme Defense loads in it or  would that cause problems?

What could be recommended that won't hurt the gun and will still be a good load?

Critical Defense by Hornady is some good ammo.  With an older Colt, I'd use the lighter bullets at moderate velocity.  Hornady makes a 90 grain and a 110 grain that are not +p rated.

That said, if push came to shove, a few rounds of +p are not going to hurt it.  Just don't do a steady diet of the hot stuff.

I would stay away from the +P but other than that your Colt will digest anything.
As Lawman Mark said a few rounds of +P won’t hurt but not a steady diet of them.

Thanks, gents.  Now I can sleep nights without worrying.

Next comes a search for a decent holster.  It came with one, but I'm going to find one that is more to my liking.

Luckily I am surrounded buy top quality leather worker her.

Thanks again.

Forty,

I wouldn’t use +P at all. There are plenty of non +P ammo choices.

This is an excellent website / link for .38 and .357 ammo tested by a Lucky Gunner. The 2” revolver tests are very interesting and eye opening. I used to carry Hornady American Gunner in my J frames, until I reviewed their testing. Critical Defense is a good one. I would like to try Federal HST if I can ever find some.

Fair warning. This is a rabbit hole…

edit: I did try Federal’s low recoil Hydra Shok .38 Spl and it was very accurate from my 442 and 36.

Don't forget that +P .38 ammo has quite a bit of kick in a snub revolver. The standard pressure ammo might be better for defense simply because you can control it better. Having said that, there's probably no harm in shooting it with standard ammo but slipping in a cylinder full of +Ps when actually carrying it.
