Forty Rod SASS 3935
Picked up some .38 special ammo today, 60 rounds of mixed stuff. Five of them are Federal hollow points with silver-colored case and a semi-gloss black bullet that looks like maybe a plastic coating. I've also seen some similar with a flat nosed bullet, but I didn't get a look at them, but these are the only rounds of any caliber that I've seem with these strange bullets. No box, no info. Are these something I could safely shoot in a 75 year old Colt Detective Special or a Charter Arms Undercover?
Subdeacon Joe
If you hadn't said Federal I would have said Winchester Black Talon. All I could find in Federal is
Alpo
I'm thinking along with Joe. Federal Ny-clads. Lead semi wadcutter hollow point, with a nylon coating instead of a metal jacket. They were supposed to be the best 38 special defense rounds, back in the day, especially for short barrels. Originally made for Smith & Wesson. Then they discontinued them. But now they have brought them back, but instead of being coated with nylon they are powder coated.
Pat Riot
Does the case head say “38 Spl +P”? If so there’s no way I would shoot it in my old Colt’s DS. Actually, I wouldn’t shoot any unknown ammo in my Colt’s DS. But that’s just me. The Charter is replaceable.
Rip Snorter
I would not shoot mixed anonymous ammunition at all!
Forty Rod SASS 3935
Not +P and all the rest is in factory boxes. The only ones I have doubts about are some Winchester solid lead round nose stuff that is so old that the lead looks like it's been flocked with cotton. I think I'll give them to someone who reloads to see if they can use anything there. I think I'll risk the black bullet stuff in a .
