Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172
Playing around in my mind, thinking of reloading some -06 rounds with 185 grain Sierra bullets for my grand son. Wondering if anyone uses Hodgdon's Varget powder. All of my reloading in -06 has been with IMR 4896. ED: Or perhaps using a 165 grain bullet. Well, Hodgdon says for the 165 grain the M/V runs ~2700/ 2800 F/S Pressure range is 44,500 low/ 49,700 high end. For the 180 Grain it runs ~2500/2600 F/S. Pressure range is 41,900 low/50,000 high end. Looking at Sierra's web page they show only the Match King bullet in 180 grain. That is why I am think the 165 might be a better way to go. irish ike, SASS #43615
Varget is a greta powder. Not temperature sensitive. I load 308, 30-06 and 5.56 with it. You didn't say what rifle..... Most 06 web sites refer tot eh 165 grain bullet as a good starting point for any long range shooting. Also are you plinking or going for long range accuracy? Powder type, bullet and rifle all have to be in sync. Ike

Sagebrush Burns, SASS # 14226
Instead of 180 grainers I use the Hornady 190 BTSP Interlock in front of a max charge of RL-22. Gives better velocity than 180s, excellent accuracy, and kills elk very nicely.
The Original Lumpy Gritz
I have used Varget for a long time and it's a great '06 powder. Load towards the high end, for smallest groups. Will not meter well from a PM. Like measuring toothpicks. OLG
