Major Forsyth
Pards, I've got an early 1930's serial number 16 gauge win 97. I've completely replaced left and right extractors, the ejector spring, the bolt screw and basically any other part that has a tendency to fail. BUT, the bolt will not hold the shell snug to the face. The rims on the 16 gauge shells I'm using are Herters and their rims are not as thick as the 12 gauge shells I use in my other shotguns. I've angled the left hand extractor a bit to attempt to make better contact but it is still too loose. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance. Maj. Yul Lose
Are you sure that the bolt is a 16 gauge bolt? I bought a 16 gauge 97 on Gunbroker and it had a 12 gauge bolt in it and it would not hold the hull.

Volga Vigilante
Had the same problem with a stevens 520. Wrong bolt.
Major Forsyth
Yes, it is a 16 gauge bolt. When I bought it, it was not so I bought one. To check I tried to hold a 12 gauge shell to the face and it will not fit.

Rex M Rugers #6621
Hmmm , maybe try some other brand of shells , see if the rims are thicker??? And if so , if that helps?? One could hope it would be that simple. Good luck , Rex
Happy Jack, SASS #20451
I had the same problem with Fiocchi shells in a 16 gauge. Sent it to Lonnie at Run-N-Iron and now it works like a charm. No idea what he did but it works great now.
Lefty Dude, SASS # 51223
With my 97/16 I run all my factory loaded shells thru my MEC Super-Sizer before use. I find with some the base is not sized properly because of the steel case head. I have no problems with the all brass case head shells, which are small base Winchester. It is the Federals and such that are at issue. Works for me.
