John Boy
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated Have you tried a 38 Spl cylinder in the 44 action to determine if the head space is correct & indexing will work?

Crooked River Pete, SASS 43485
I converted an old Uberti many years ago, before you could buy one already made. Made my own cylinder, sleeved the barrel with a Dan Wesson barrel and dovetailed the front sight. Shoots great, but I rarely shoot it any more. I'd say go for it.
