Hazmat Shipping?

Recommended Posts

I have 50 10 gauge Hulls. 12 are once fired. The rest are black powder #8 shot shells. Where I to sell these as a lot . . . How much would the Hazmat fee be?

Hazmat fees apply to components like primers and powder not to assembeled ammunition. (It's not supposed to make sense. That's just the way it is.) If I understnd your question correctly, 12 hulls have been fired so no hasmat fee applies there. The rest are assembeled black powder ammunition so no hazmat fee applies there either. Total Hazmat fee = $0.00.

Ammunition ... smokeless or BP sent via UPS Ground.

A label with the following will get you through

I put three on the boxes so a label can be seem no matter how the box is set down.

----------------------------------

ORM-D

small arms ammunition

---------------------------------

There is NO hazmat fee for loaded ammunition of less than 50 cal.

If you ship 50 cal things change.

Be prepared to open the box for inspection.

I take all my out going orders to UPS with the box not taped up.

I leave one end open.

After the weigh in, I slip a copy of the UPS charges in the box.

I have only been asked to open for inspection once since 1998.

This was new guy on the counter trying to enforce rules on me for over 50 caliber ammunition.

we had a talk and a supervisor came and opened the box..more to show the new guy what it was all about.

Put your loaded shotgun rounds in standard shotgun boxes.

You do not have to specify smokeless or BP.

If they ask, they are just reloaded shotgun rounds.

I was under the impression you had to be a licensed manufacturer to sell/ship ammunition that you have reloaded. Anybody know?

Black powder is a low yield explosive. As such I would guess there would be a hazmat fee.

BP is a class 1 explosive.

ORM-D label is all that needed. Can NOT ship USPS must go 'common-carrier'.

People ship ammo to themownselves for big shoots all the time.

I'm curious about who actually gets the Hazmat fee... does the carrier get to keep it? Does it go - in total or in part - to some gubmint agency? Has any of it ever been spent to recover from a hazardous material mishap...?
