Chili Ron
Howdy, I have been a comcast customer for some time. I pay my bills on time and expect that I should get the performance I pay for. Well guess what, I was getting only about a third of what I paid for. I googled 'comcast download speed' and went to a comcast site that measured my delivered speed at a few mbps. Then I was offered a modification that stepped up my speed to about 19 mbps. I think I am still paying for a faster speed than I am getting but I can see the added speed of the upgrade. If you are paying for real speed, go to your supplier and be SURE you are gettin what you pay for. My computer was delivered to me without the speed display enabled. You might want to check your service and your machine. If your machine options are enabled you should be able to see your connection speed off of the toolbar on the right lower corner of windows explorer. the icon should be a little computer. Best CR and now back to 'Is my gun leegal'....
Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381
You can always do a real time speed check at Speakeasy.
Blue Steel Duke
Yep, we just switched to AT&T UVerse for that very reason. With Comcast, watch the speeds especially in the evening when everyone's on, it drops like a stone. BSD
Mad Dog Jack, SASS #77862
You can always do a real time speed check at Speakeasy. I check mine with Speakeasy, but satellite speeds vary with weather, time of day, and if the mother ship is between me and my satellite. I used to work for a large cable company and if our speeds were within 3/4 of the speed paid for it was within spec, but mostly it was pretty darn close. If they are consistently very low throughout the day call for a tech call to check lines, at least if you have cable. No idea what phone companies do, and nothing can fix satellite, evidently. Springfield Slim SASS #24733
I just switched back to Comcast from Verizon. It isn't that fast but at least it is consistant. With the copper phone lines with Verizon every time it rained I had to worry about it not working at all for hours. They tried 4 times to fix it but could never come up with a fix, so bye bye Verizon.
Adirondack Jack, SASS #53440
The wacky thing from my perspective is although my Road Runner avererages 12-14Mbps download, my Android phone at 2Mbps on DSL is not THAT MUCH slower in terms of lag. Lotta times the real issue is not raw speed, but browser you're using, (IE-8 here) will "bring with" lots of baggage that slows the effective speed. If I get a real sticky website I NEED to download from, I use Safari. it's less "baggage laden" and runs faster. For VIDEO, the absolute cleanest downloads I ever had were using 3G over the Droid with the laptop tethered to it for Wifi. A clean OS is the ticket.... Chili Ron
Howdy, I tried speakeasy for the first time. They offered a free scan of my harddrive for errors. A few hundred errors were found and then they offered to clean off all those nasty errors for forty bucks.... Ive seen that trick before and immediatly removed the installed program. The speed check was free, I expect some junk mail.... wonder how bad thats gonna git... Best CR
Iron Pony
My experience mirrors that of Slim. DSL at the homestead was right at the end of the run so speed was never as advertised, so much so Verizon offered a reduced price. Then FairPoint (or slowpoint as we call it) took over and service went to hell, speeds bounced around like a trash can in a hurricane. Went to cable provided service and have never had a problem. Can also run the android on the wifi network with zero issues as well.
