Red Logan #12252 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 What have we learned in 2,066 years? "The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." Cicero - 55 BC Evidently nothing.
Foul Mouth Frank Shutz Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 The ruling class has learned that bread and circuses works just as well today as they did 2,066 years ago.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 It is heck on gladiators tho.
Long Branch Louie Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Badger, maybe we could start a Gladiator's Action Society, where we pretend to be like we do with our matches. We could have short-stroked maces, polished spears and maybe even chariots with the anti-backup pawls removed. This could be huge....
Foul Mouth Frank Shutz Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 It is heck on gladiators tho. We could use the losers of the midterm elections and criminals, oops I repeat myself.

Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Actually, it's a quote from Taylor Caldwell's "Pillar of Iron", her 1965 novel about Cicero; it's fiction. However, it's useful to note that something must have turned out right, because Rome had several more centuries to go after Cicero was chopped.
Badger Mountain Charlie SASS #43172 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I'll bet they were fun times too, Red.

For some reason I knew some one would have some other info on this, but I like what was suppose to have been said, even if it wasn't Cicero.
