Totes, wrote an excellent post. Twenty or so years ago I realized that when I experience something that "just is not right", it is probably because there is information I do not know. Closer to present, ten year ago or so, while participating in an annual match, my shotgun was giving me fits. Fired shells would hang up in the chamber, I had to pick them out with my fingers. As it turned out my extractor in the 97 was worn out (surprize). WTC, shotgun is first, After the last round the hull sticks, I declare "bad gun" and move to the next firearm. Retrieving the shotgun, at the end, I turn it over and the hull drop out. WTC? Please refer to specific reference, in SASS documentation. BTW, that extractor cost me 10's of seconds at that match. I replaced it the next week.

Great question. There inlies the problem. Under the supervision of the TO (assuming the TO suspects that the gun is NOT broken) have the shooter pull out the hull. At that point make a decision. FYI, a shooter can pick up a "declared dead" gun and bring it to the ULT, under the supervision of the TO. Actually any "broken" gun must be handled under the supervision of the TO.

This is similar to a rifle with a closed action, the TO should have the shooter open the action, NOT the TO. In this case the shooter should be the person checking, if there is checking to be done! Once anyone else makes contacts with the gun-hull, problems can happen. Was the call correct? Probably. It would have been better for the shooter to clear the hull, thus demonstrating the lack of effort at the time and eliminating opinions.

Based on the three posts, I would agree that the shooter took advantage of the "stuck hull" and choose to declare the gun "bad" in order to save time. It is possible the shooter suspected something was not right with the firearm, and in the shooters opinion at that time it may have been a malfunction versus a stoppage. What to do? Now the problem is amplified. Ideally the TO would only allow the shooter to handle the gun as the TO suspected it was not a malfunction. At which point the shooter demonstrates how easily the hull was removed. Now, what to call? The TO could say something like "You saw how easily the hull was removed, you should have taken the time, MSV. If the shooter argues, SOG. Because the TO handled the gun, then a warning would be appropriate, benefit of doubt goes to shooter. SOG next time.

Based ONLY on the initial post, No call. The shooter did attempt to clear the gun, per the OP. At this point it is all speculation as to the shooter intent. No-Call. Does the third post include any valuable information? All I read is opinion. ---> no call Did the shooter spend enough time to clear the gun? That is a matter of opinion based on the posts. Did the shooter declare "Bad gun" to gain an advantage? Opinion!!! Should there be another rule to enforce regarding the effort performed by the shooter? Let your TG know.

I agree, an open book exam does not evaluate "taking it in", this is where discussion has value. "oh, now I get it" is a strong clue as to "getting it". ...and why spending more time has value, ie. on another day. Versus doing all three in six hours.

Not intending to hijack the OP. Clay Poppers? If you miss then you must fire another round. Is this just another form of a bonus target? The bonus is NOT adding the additional time to fire another round, versus the time it might take to actually aim and hit the clay. Do the above comments apply in this case?
