  1. When a newer shooter or any of us who are trying to improve our game watch more experienced shooters run a stage, we look at what they are doing and often try to incorporate things they do into our own game. What they are doing is usually pretty easy to see but it's what they are not doing sometimes that makes a big part of the difference. The idea behind this thread is to compile a list of things not to do that we may commonly see people doing. Here are a few off the top of my head that I see often. don't lever your rifle until it is in your shoulder. Doing it on the way up slows you down and I have seen it cause a round to go over the berm a few times. another one I see commonlybis when the pistol sweep is 10 on 3, I see a lot of people engaging more than one target with both guns. You only have to engage 2 targets with one gun and one with the other. Minimizing target transition time safes time. when there are 2 pairs of shotgun targets and you happen to miss one of the first 2 shots with a sxs, move on to the other pair with the next 2 shots, then reload again and go back to the one standing. Taking the makeup right away makes you swing more between shots and costs time. Make the big swings whenever possible while reloading. So what are some common mistakes you see made? I really think this thread could be benificial to a lot of people.
  2. Period correct is way too specific. I prefer "historically plausible".
  3. The Cajon Cowboys and all Southern California shooters have lost a hero today. Calamity Candy has left us. She will be sorely missed. Candy was a rare breed. She was that special kind of person who always put others first. I can't think of a single time where she did otherwise, even when it meant there may be nothing left for her. She spent countless hours (years really) dedicating herself to the game we all love and always did it with a smile on her face. The world is a brighter place since she has been a part of it and she has left an impression in my heart that will always be there.
  4. What the others have said. Sometimes easier to show than explain by text.
  5. They are lighter, have thinner wrists, and can have a bump step modification done to them. These were the biggest reasons that my times dropped when I switched from my stoeger.
  6. I am not sure if he does or not. There are very fast shooters who use each method. Do what works best for you. Some will say that one way is faster than the other but that can pretty easily be disproved on either side.
  7. You are sure the chamber is 44-40 and not .44mag?
  8. You had better straighten up or they are gonna dock your pay...😝
  9. For me the differences that matter are: SKB is lighter SKB will last longer SKB has a much thinner wrist which makes controlling it during shucking easier SKB can have a bump step added which keeps the gun open until you close it.
  10. I guess I can only speak for myself but I have never, ever left a match upset about an award someone else took home. I may not be completely content with my own performance at times but never have I lost any sleep about what someone else had to accomplish to get an award. Life is too short.... One of the best things about this game is that there are 100 different ways and reasons to play it. We all play together in our own ways and have a great time. If another persons award bothers you maybe taking a closer look at what you want to get out of this game and focusing on that would do you well. (No disrespect meant by this post at all) like I said, we all play our own way but if it's not making you happy, maybe there is a better way.
  11. Moving into the other category is optional. Nobody is being removed to anywhere. If there were a gunfighter who you stood near zero chance of beating in your category who decided to move to B western, would you feel insulted or somehow robbed when you moved up a place?
  12. Can't make them do it but I think most will chase after the buckle.
  13. I agree and with the addition of the other categories to the annual awards idea, I am leaning towards doing away with the qualification idea and allowing anyone to shoot the open/Renegade category who wants to. The silver buckle for that category will hopefully draw some of the fastest shooters, making more room at the top of the other categories.
  14. I am also gauging interest on giving points and tracking all other categories throughout the year as well this makes the impact even better as this draws the fastest shooters into a category where they will face more competition and allows others to finish higher and likely win their annual category award. Just Thought.
  15. Yes we will award to 5th place in these two categories only. Based on their points totals from the year.
  16. Cowboys and Indian store 5th generation would be the only one I would consider. They have the best parts out there.
  17. Let's play a game. Here is a little something we are going to offer at The Cowboys for 2017. There will be 2 new categories available called Renegade and Lady Renegade. These categories will be available starting in February to the top 10 overall men and top 10 overall ladies from the previous month if they choose to participate. The category rules are as follows: Must have placed in top 10 last month. Any SASS legal guns (.22 and .410 for buckaroos only) shot any style on any stage. Placement in these categories will earn you points. 10 points for first, 9 for second, 8 for third, etc. points will be posted on Facebook and on a leader board at the range. Points may only be earned at monthly matches. After the next December match there will be awards for the top 5 in each category and silver buckles for the winners. All awards will be sponsored so this will be a $0 cost to the club. If you are interested in helping to sponsor these awards, please contact Smokestack. Looking forward to 2017. See ya on the range. Thank you Slick McClade for the concept idea.
  18. Caliber means far less when it comes to speed than you think.
  19. Mostly with 7018 stick. It would be tough to get enough weld on a target thickness piece with .035 wire.
  20. AR500 can be welded just fine, and can also be cut with a torch without hurting it. You will notice that most of the people who will say that cutting it with a torch ruins it are trying to pay for very expensive water jet machines. I use this stuff, cutting and welding it in place regularly the edges do not wear any faster where they were cut with a torch.
  21. AR500 steel is best. With that you can go down to 5/16" thick without any problems. Size can vary pretty wildly. 8"-24". If I were buying practice targets I would probably be looking for something in the 18" range.
  22. For those who are unfamiliar with W3G, this is the type of movement typically available. https://youtu.be/sOtgSsgUS58
  23. I found it interesting that the author seems to think that wild bunch draws as many shooters as SASS. Maybe it is just in my area but it is not even close here. How many stand alone wild bunch events do you see apart from a monthly event here or there?
