Watch Out Middle Florida...(Now Officially Hurricane) Milton Is On The Way!

Recommended Posts

Well, we got through another hurricane.  Milton was a doozy.  No flooding in my neighborhood but had a lot of high wind and got through 2 tornado warnings in my area.  Unfortunately, it hit Lake Placid a town south of Sebring.  Hurricane eye went just north of Sebring in Avon Park about 10 miles from me.  Power outages still exist and just got my power on.   My daughter and son in law who lives near Sarasota came to stay with us and it's a good thing because they had some damage to their home, but it can be fix.  Daughter and grandkids in New Port Richey still waiting for power to come on but no damage or flooding but they are ok.  My other families living in Sarasota are ok. Tornadoes are a more threat in Central Florida than flooding, we don't get storm surges inland.  I pray for the people on the coast and hope they get through all these mess.

We got power back a little after midnight this morning. Good thing as I was almost out of gasoline for the generator and fuel is scarce around these parts right now. Where there is fuel, there is also 2 hour lines to get it and the station runs out within a few hours. I read a report from the Pasco Co Sheriffs Dept that there had been 177 calls for fights at fuel lines/pumps as of Friday. We filled our vehicles up way before the storm we're good there.

A curious thing happened this afternoon. A team of Nevada Fire Rescue firemen/rescuers came around door to door asking if we needed anything and inquiring about damage. They were somehow associated with FEMA as they also had patches that said both Nevada Fire Rescue and FEMA on it.

They were dressed in full black uniforms with red helmets and accompanied by two Federal Marshalls who stayed in their black, unmarked vehicle. The Marshalls themselves were in two white vans with Nevada plates. I talked to one of them for a short while and asked them if they wanted cold water as they were dressed in full black and it was hotter than hell. They were all from Las Vegas.

My daughter said she now has power back but they can't find any gas for the vehicles. They had to go almost to Orlando to find a station that had gas available and power for the pumps to work.

We finally got a call from the woman who watches our condo while we are away.  We were very fortunate in that we do not have any flood damage from Helene (being on the 3rd floor helped! :P) and there was no damage from Milton either.  Some of the owners had wind blown water forced through their windows and sliding doors, and a few buildings lost some shingles, but fortunately our building replaced the roof just two years ago so we did OK.

She said that for our development, Helene was the worse of the two storms as the surge flooded most of the first floor units in the entire complex.  Since Milton landed south of us, our area got a lot of rain and high wind, but not the flooding storm surge like with Helene.

Power came back on Friday evening (actually ahead of the prediction from Duke) but the Grinder Pumps for the sewage were offline until the next morning, and then only one was working.  The complex is still operating on only one pump.  The BOD sent out the following email...

If you evacuated please stay where you are and do not come back.   We more than likely will lose power again as Duke continues their restoration efforts.    We do not want to create a situation where many owners come back and we lose power again and fill the pump station.   This will create a bad situation for 1st floor owners in Bldg 1-4.

Funny thing, they say it is the owners responsibility to check their unit for damage, but they don't want anyone to come back...

Prayers continue for all of those that have been impacted by these storms.  I know some folks lost everything, I just hope they can get the help they need to get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
