I figured they were both 12 gauge, but wasn't sure if there was a difference between a 1278 and an 0178 which I've been using for years even with Ellie's 11gr. RedDot loads.

Oops sorry I read them as the same number just with one having the -12.  :o  Looking them both up they both show grey color and for 7/8 oz. loads.  SO I do not know the difference.  Someone else will have to tell us. :P  Hopefullyy before I order some for me to try. :D

What is the difference between the CB-1278 wad you list and a ClayBusters CB0178-12? I couldn't seem to find info on the 1278. Is it slightly taller to account for the lighter load?

that is probably what I meant :-) this is 12 gauge for 7/8ths oz of shot

Yep, that would be the CB0178-12. About 13 to 14gr if shotgun powder work well for CAS. Keep em around 1000fps +/-

If I were just starting out load shotshells... the first thing I would buy is a copy of the latest Lyman Shotshell loading manual.  It will provide exact recipes for most hulls.  Including wad, primer and powder charges for different hulls.  For your MEC, here's a copy of the MEC bushing chart for powder:  https://hodgdonpowderco.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/mec.pdf.

You'll note that most formulas will bottom out around 1145 - 1250 fps... You don't need that for SASS.  Win LNLR are advertised at 980 fps.  I've never failed to knock down a shotgun target if it's hit since I started using them.
