End of Trail 2025 Side Match Updates Revealed - Updated with website link

Recommended Posts

Howdy SASS Shooters,

Well, the finishing touches are on and we’re able to announce the 2025 End Of Trail side match lineup. Our intent was simply to get more people shooting and to give them more events to shoot.

The changes involve the schedule as well as the categories and break down as follows:
1)    All Speed, Plainsman, Warm-up, and Long Range matches will be on Wednesday.
2)    All Clay Target matches will be on Tuesday.
3)    Side matches will no longer be Cowboy or Wild Bunch specific. All registered shooters and conventioneers can shoot any match for which they have the proper firearms. Side match winners will be the overall winner of each event.
4)    Firearms used must be Main Match legal in either the Cowboy or Wild Bunch match.

Side matches planned for EOT 2025:

1)    Long Range

  • Long Range Revolver – 5 rounds *
  • Long Range Pistol (1911) – 7 rounds
  • Lever Action Rifle - Revolver or Pistol caliber – 10 rounds *
  • Lever Action Rifle – Rifle caliber – 5 rounds *
  • Take No Prisoners (description on EOT website) – 16 rounds
  • Long Range Bolt Action – 5 rounds
  • Sgt. York (description on EOT website) – 11 rounds
  • Unknown Distance Rifle – 6 rounds
  • Single Shot Rifle (smokeless) – 10 rounds *
  • Buffalo Single Shot Rifle (BP) – 10 rounds *
  • Quigley – 3 rounds
  • Bill Williams Bison Single Shot – 10 rounds

EDITED: *Revolver, Rifle - Pistol caliber, Rifle - Rifle caliber, and either Single Shot, or Buffalo Single Shot scores combine for Long Range Overall Winner

2)    Speed

  • Pocket Pistol – 5 rounds
  • Derringer – 2 rounds
  • Pump Shotgun – Start Empty – 6 rounds
  • Pump Shotgun – Stoked – 6 rounds
  • Hammer Double Shotgun – 6 rounds
  • Double Shotgun – 6 rounds
  • Lever Shotgun – 6 rounds
  • Rifle – 10 rounds
  • Pistol (1911) Two Handed – 14 rounds
  • Pistol (1911) One Handed – 14 rounds
  • Revolver – Two Handed – 10 rounds

Question on the Sgt. York - is the M1917 allowed?  I was able to read the PDF for "Take no Prisoners", but unable to find one that addressed Sgt York?

Ok, I had to punt this one to the WB gurus. "The M1917 Enfield is allowed, but the M1917 Browning is not." I think they are making fun of me but I'm not sure .

Sgt York rules will hopefully be added soon.

Thank you --- I think with the M1917 Browning, I could hit the broad side of the barn  😆

Bummer that my 03A3 is banned in the Bucky.  I don't have a regular 03 sadly.  Also not clear why my M12 is banned from the shotgun events but it is what it is.  My cowboy shotgun doesn't have a tight enough choke to shoot clays.

Any Cowboy or Wild Bunch main match legal firearm may be used in the side matches. If your M12 shotgun is legal for Wild Bunch it is legal for the side matches.

I thought the same thing, especially because the side matches page say that the side matches are not WB or CAS specific and I thought the purpose was to be inclusive.  Then I was on the shotgun events page and saw this gem:

https://endoftrail.org/shotgun-events/

"The Shotgun events are held at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center. Black Powder and Smokeless categories. Any SASS Cowboy Action (not Wild Bunch) legal shotgun may be used in either category."

At this point I'm considering not shooting the Wild Bunch because of this and delaying my arrival until Wednesday.  My wife works until that Wednesday morning and if I can't fill my days before she can show up with side matches, I might as well just show up for the cowboy only, which works better for our schedule anyway.  Although I really don't need an excuse to buy another gun so maybe next year I'll buy a "cowboy clays" gun.  I was looking forward to the Sgt. York, but another 3 days on the road and my wife having to make a 12 hour round trip herself to join me at EoT is a tough sell.

I hope on the Cowboy long range the awards will all be 3 place some have one others have three. The Bill Williams was only one place. If you can shoot a single shot rifle out to 700 yard and make good hits they should give out  three places for awards. Make every thing the places

Yes, as I posted earlier, the website is in the process of being updated with the new info.

Just a suggestion, but if you could post an approximate target size description on the long range stuff it'd be appreciated.

The Long Range targets, since they are only used for one day, are the last to be set. Therefore they are whatever is left over after setting the Cowboy and Wild bunch targets. However, at this time I don't think we have anything under 18".
