Gunsmith question: Baikal MP220 extractor mod?

Recommended Posts

I am handing a couple of Baikals to Lefty Wheeler tomorrow at the state match.  One of them is an MP-220 which has the larger extractor which I don't care for.  I know on some shotguns the top part of the extractor can be cut off and secured to the back of the barrels so only the bottom part moves.   Lefty is not familiar with this particular gun and doesn't know if it is possible and will check it out, but does anyone know if it possible on this gun?  The lower part has a rather large round rod that goes into the barrels, and the upper part has a thin rod.  Will cutting it make the bottom part of the extractor want to rotate?  Thanks.

Yes, that model responds well to the modification.  I can't guarantee that a single rod supports the remainder without it twisting, not having done one of those jobs.   So Lefty should take a close look at the main extractor rod to see how it resists rotation as it opens.  A brief inspection of mine shows the extractor rod is round and not keyed in any manner.  So it may be necessary to move the upper thin rod down to a convenient spot closer to the main rod.

My gun was modified by a smith years ago and all that he did was to whittle away the upper ears of the extractor so that the shell is only touched by extractor from mid point (between the barrels) down and around to straight down.  90 degrees of contact.  Has worked wonderfully for me and a previous shooter too.

good luck, GJ

Give Texas Gunslinger aka Bob Sanders a call.  He has modified a lot of Baikals.

Well, that would work.  Do you have a picture?  This gun was worked on by Johnny Meadows before I got it, and the extractor has smoothed edges but he told the owner that was all he could do to it.  At least, that is what was relayed to me.

I resist shipping guns as much as possible for a variety of reasons, but I can hand these personally to Lefty.

Abilene : Here's the way I did one about 10yrs. ago . The top half of the extractor I pinned with a 1/8" roll pin ( spring pin) , then I made a jig and used a .020 slitting

saw to cut the extractor in half just above the two guide pins. Not a hard modification. I used a drill press and a milling machine.

Mine is a Spartan variation of the mp-220.  It only has the top and bottom (large) extractor rods.   Not two small and the large bottom rod.  So, perhaps that will make a difference in how the work gets done.

good luck, GJ

Mine says Baikal on it, not Spartan, but it has the rods like G.J. shows.  Willie, if mine had the two rods where yours does then I can see it would be relatively easy.

I've got two IZH-43's, one is my main match gun 'smithed by Coyote Cap over 20 years ago.  The other is a clunker that someone butchered but has a great barrel.  I was going to have Lefty swap the barrels (The MP220 barrel fits the IZH43 fine, but not vice-versa, needs a bit of fitting on the locking bars or lugs and beyond my pay grade).  But then I thought if he could modify the MP220 extractor that might be better.  I think I would also be happy with shaving it like G.J.'s if he will do that.  We have options.  Thanks, guys, especially the pics.

From the pictures Willie took, I would think he installed TWO spring pins, one to help hold the top half in place, and one to act as a guide rod in the lower half.  I see two spring pins in his.

I think the way the Russians built them was with just the extractor rod (bottom) and one guide rod at the top.

good luck, GJ

Yes they can be readily modified for the low profile extractor.  I have done many, many of them.  After the extractor is cut, the screw that holds the extractor in, needs to be recessed a bit deeper to make full contact with the flat on the now lower part of the extractor.  It will allow it to slide on the flat and not rotate.

If the extractor has had the ears cut away already or some other mods, it may not be able to do this.

Thanks, Ken, great info which I will pass on to Lefty, save him some time figuring it out.  Glad I looked here one more time before heading to the range.  Here is the extractor:
