Yea.... Turning surplus Military vehicles into Fire Fighting trucks isn't something new. 

 

After WW2, a number of American made M3 half-track found their way into civilian service as "all-terrain" pumpers and tankers.

I looked at the title, and was trying to decide whether they were beating knives into something

I recall some folks at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department getting pretty excited about getting some surplus HumVees until they found out what the cost would be to make them street safe / legal in the U.S. 

Of course the panty-waste that was elected to Sheriff thought it would send the wrong message. D’bag.

Back in the 70's, I had a 2LT friend that spent 3 months with the French Foreign Legion on an exchange officer bit.  They still had these and other WWII left overs as primary equipment.  No parts except what they made by hand.
