Fahrpanzer

Recommended Posts

This is an early armored mobile artillery system, the Fahrpanzer. The Fahrpanzer was created in Germany in the late 1800s as a piece of protected artillery that could be moved into positions for combat, and pulled out the way when not in use.

Within the upper, semi-hemispherical section of the armored body was a 5.3cm Gruson quick-firing gun. Interestingly, this section was a primitive turret, as it could rotate.

Fahrpanzers would be brought to a location and mounted on narrow-gauge railway tracks. With the use of these tracks, they could be moved to different firing positions as needed.

Fahrpanzers travelled longer distances on horse carriages, as seen in this image.

That would make a cool yard decoration...

Especially with a motion detector that could slew the gun.
