back to Puma .45 that jams

got together today and tore it down (and got it back together without any extra parts laying around!)

quick summary:  rifle would double feed at the beginning of the string but would feed OK the last half.

we did notice the cartridge stop was not working.  would not come out to block mag tube follower or any cartridges in the tube

took out the cartridge guide and the flat spring is there.  Even pushing the spring below the surface of the guide there is no tention on the cartridge guide stop.  we pushed the spring forward, the round part was now above its recess but the flat end was further in its end, and still nothing

our theroy is with the spring fully compressed the cartridges will come out of the tube in multiple amounts.  Once the pressure on the mag tube is decreased by having less rounds in it, the gun works fine (which is the case--it only jams on the first couple of shots then settles down

so big question is where do we find a replacement Cartridge Stop Spring?

or it still could be somthing completely different :o

thanks for any input

First question, does the cartridge stop move freely when it is out of the gun?

Second question,  is the spring installed correctly?

When properly installed one end is under the cartridge stop and the end with the hole is standing out away from the cartridge guide assembly. When you press the hole end down and it is aligned with the screw hole the spring should lay flat against the cartridge guide.

If both ends are touching the cartridge guide and the middle is not the spring needs to be flipped.

▲ We have a Winner!

I put it in backwards--in my defence it was much easier that way--never mind the gun doesn't work :o

much thanks--now to get the gun back and do it right

You probably don't need to... anyone that ever taken an 1892 apart has put this spring in backwards at least once!

Problem with 45 Colt double feeding in Puma/Rossi rifle.

Measure your finish cartridges.

Over all maximum length for 45 Colt is 1.60".

Try loading your cartridges to an overall length of 1.58".

Double feeding can be a cartridge stop issue but it can also be cartridges that are to short letting the next cartridge on to the front of the lifter.

Check your lifter for a groove caused by the second cartridge on the lifter.

The lifter ramp is there to push the next cartridge back in to the magazine tube but the lifter is soft metal and the cartridge rim will make a groove in the lifter which will try to hold the cartridge in place rather than slide the cartridge forword.

If you have a groove at the from of the lifter, file and polish it smooth again.

The 1892 doesn't have a ramp on the carrier, rounds are not pushed back into the magazine like the 1873.  It relies on the positive cartridge stop attached to the left guide to keep rounds in the magazine.
