Sinking the Mighty O

Recommended Posts

:( Well better than being cut up for scrap I guess.

Everything scrappable was recycled. All the lead paint was scraped off and dumped as was the asbestos and anything else remotely toxic

When the ships were buried at sea after the Bikini Atoll tests I think only the oils were removed. One day the O might be valued as a source of prenuclear steel.

They should have scuttled it with torpedoes or missiles rather than the way they did. The Navy missed an excellent training exercise.

They did it in a controlled manor so that the Mighty O would sit upright on the sea floor on a particular spot.

In addition to becoming an artificial reef it will be an excellent sport diving attraction.

Then her resting place and position would have been haphazard.

With the bottom at 215 feet, this looks like an interesting dive site.  Definitely not for the novice.
