Red Cent
I am hearing that there is a "fix" on the market for the Malcolm/Hi-Lux/Leatherwood scope adjustment problem. I have read about RVB solution but this is a Vernier type replacement. Don't know the price but heard it was under $100.00. Looking at the NRA rules, the 3/4" rule puts everything else out of reach. Is there anything else out there with around 10X + power?

kevo
Greetings all. Like Red Cent I would love to find an affordable answer to the period scope rear mount problem. I started off with the usual adjusting mount. Given time to hone in on one range, this was fine. Trouble was as soon as you tried to change settings or return to a previous setting, the result was NEVER the same. I have gone down the path of having a mount made by an engineering friend, it is ridiculously big and cumbersome. Are there any other mounts out there that shooters can get to put on their period scopes that are a reasonable price and give good repeatability?? Red Cent
Kevo, I believe our answer, while more $, is the Leatherwood Hi-Lux William Malcolm USMC Sniper Rifle Scope 3/4" Tube 8x . For a little under $600.00, you get a set of mounts that resemble Unertls and they throw in a scope. I believe what I have read says that the mounts are "Not only will this scope match the originals for extremely precise adjustment of windage and elevation, the new made scope also offers the advantages of modern lens making." https://gundigest.com/how-to/sniper-scope The article is old and the price has went up (imagine that!!). John Boy's referred site is a typical one for those who have bought the cheaper Malcolms. Montana Vintage Arms has a good set up. http://montanavintagearms.com/product/winchester-scopes/winchester-b-series-scope-with-no-2-mount/ A cowboy posted about this some time ago. http://rvbprecision.com/shooting/leatherwood-sniper-scope-mounts-a-review.html Since I posted here I think I have found the "fix" for the bad rear mount on the Malcom repros. http://www.opticsplanet.com/leatherwood-fine-elevation-adjustment-set.html As in my original post I would like to hear from experienced buyers. I would like to scope the new rifle that I just ordered.
Mad Dane, SASS#5536
Pedersoli makes a very nice rear mount that is available at VTI Gun parts-while not cheap, it takes care of the problem. Leatherwood used to make one, they say back in stock maybe next year. BTW-the fine adjustment kit ain't the answer. I have installed these scopes on 2 different rifles-no complaints on the scope itself.
The Original Lumpy Gritz
You don't save a thing going the cheap on glass. Go with MVA. https://montanavintagearms.com/scopes/ OLG
Happy Jack, SASS #20451
I agree with Lumpy. MVA I have had mine for years and it is still perfect. Mounts adjust properly and I even have mil dots in mine. Mine is a MVA 2000 series. These are cheap compared to good glass for a center fire rifle. Smoken D
Don't know if this is any good for what you are looking for, but on E-Bay found this Lyman Super Targetspot in 15x http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lyman-Super-Targetspot-15X-with-Mounts-Caps-Eyepiece-1-99-Start/263113979176?_trksid=p2047675.c100013.m1986&_trkparms=aid%3D777003%26algo%3DDISCL.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D45703%26meid%3D200885288b2b40eb8306ec7185628353%26pid%3D100013%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D7%26sd%3D160909580879 I have a Lyman Super Targetspot in 20x on a custom bench rifle in 280 Remington. Holds fine with that power.
John Boy
Red Cent - I don't know how often you plan to shoot the rifle your planning to put a sight on ... but you can invest a ton of money to put the scope on that's going to take more room in the gun safe. I put a Leatherwood Long Eye Relief scope on a high end German Schuetzen rifle and really can't tell the optic difference that I invested tons of money on Unertl -Fecker and Litschert scopes that are on my CPA Stevens 44 1/2 barrels ... Red Cent
I will have the ability to shoot about three times a month and on the 5th Sunday. One range shoots 100-200, another 200, and the other 100-200-300. I have read so much about these scopes I am getting confused. I recently ordered a C Sharps Hi-Wall in 38-55. 30" heavy full bull octagon. Single set trigger. Pistol grip. I want a reasonably priced vintage/period correct scope and these rings/mounts. https://hi-luxoptics.com/collections/william-malcolm-accessories/products/malcolm-usmc-8x-sniper-mount-set And, maybe, this scope. https://hi-luxoptics.com/collections/vintage-reproduction-scopes/products/malcolm-6x-long-telescopic-rifle-scope
John Boy
Red Cent - if you are going to spent that kind of money, I would buy this Unertl Tube Sight on eBay ... BUT IT ENDS IN 4 HOURS! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unertl-Tube-Sight-w-recoil-spring-for-rifle-/162613647256?hash=item25dc875798:g:yjkAAOSwI0RZgOtO And which ever sight you buy, you are going to have to have the barrel tapped for the front and back mounting blocks - separate purchases because both scopes are claw mounts. Be sure to have the taps done for the correct spacing. Here's a link for your block ... http://www.steveearleproducts.com/scopeblocks.html And the height of the blocks is another subject
Red Cent
Does not state X Sent seller request just checked here: http://unertl.alexweb.net/for_sale.htm A sight tube is a hollow tube.
John Boy
A sight tube is a hollow tube ... correct. It is used in conjunction with the vernier sight. Since you want optic power ... sorry this is not a scope for you
Red Cent
Well, it looks like the choice will be the MVA Winchester Model B (1). Top power is 5X but that will work. The combination of the MVA reputation, the many, many posts I have read, and the mounts have brought me to conclusion this will be the best package for me. The #1 turrets are no clicks but if I ever use it in NRA etc competition, it is legal. The Model B is a "short" scope. The longggggg scopes look cool but they look very fragile and vulnerable. And you can get more elevation with the short scope. I am hearing too many negatives (bunch of positives) about the Hi-Lux/Leatherwood products. To do it right with Hi-Lux, you can get the short Hi-Lux 6X and purchase the Malcolm Optics 8X USMC Sniper Mounting Kit for reliability and repeatability. $259.00 plus $395.00. The Winchester “B” Series Scope with No.1 Mount runs $575.00. I still have some time to run into that "deal" so I will be looking around.
John Boy
Red - be sure to post a picture when after the scope is mounted with the proper tap hole spacing an blocked attached. Believe you will have fun with the rig
