Augustus Goodnight
Actually there's quite a bit of truth to that quote. If there's one thing the German's were truly terrified by was massed US Artillery. No one in WWII even came close in the ability to coordinate fire on a single area/target from every gun within range. The soviets had a lot of guns and large arty barrages but they were piss poor in the coordination department.
Trailrider #896
A member of my veterans post was awarded a silver star in WWII (ETO) for calling off a U.S. artillery fire mission that was targeted right where an American infantry unit was located! Steeldust Dan, SASS #2631Life
Andy Rooney, who I believe was a correspondent for Stars and Stripes in WWII, told the story of a green American infantry unit that picked up a lot of German weapons. In their next firefight they used said German weapons. Another US unit heard the firing, and thinking it was coming from a German unit, called for artillery. After the ensuing barrage lifted they discovered their error. Rooney stated the green unit discarded all of their German weapons and relied on their GI weapons after that.
