DocWard
Did you ever finish your cart? It is sitting in my garage in working condition, but I need to put a few finishing touches on it. Given the weather, I will probably pull it into the basement this weekend and finish it up. It shouldn't take long. Once I am done, I will do a write up and snap some pictures. It isn't too impressive, given my woodworking skills and the tools I was working with, but I am happy with it!
Grizzly Dave
As long as it hauls yer irons 'round the range, it'll be fine! Don't know what made me think of that this afternoon. Grizz

Grizz If you're like me, there's no telling. Say, I was down at Cedarville University to listen to my daughter sing in a high school honor choir and we darn near got blown away by wind and rain when it was time to leave. There were even tornado watches. Hope all is well with your youngun.

DocWard
Yeah, she was telling me about a storm the other night, said there was really cool purple lightning. Crazy college kids! I saw it for myself. It was cool, if you weren't out in it and weren't aware of how bad the weather actually was! Well, a couple cups of coffee and a quick trip to Hobby Lobby and I should get started on the finishing details of the guncart.
DocWard
Well, it's done, except for a little paint on a box that goes with it that my daughter has yet to complete. I started to try a steampunk theme, but decided it was more work than I wanted to take on. It is a Harbor Freight welding cart with wood pieces cut and added for purpose. Some vinyl "leather" in different places and some leather strips to tie the guns. Here are some pics: Showing the whole thing: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1142.jpg A few close ups: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1144.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1143.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1145.jpg With a couple of long guns in place: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1146.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1149.jpg Tied in place: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1147.jpg Padding for open side by side. Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
Hi Doc, Looks good! I like the color you painted the cart. It looks like wood. After shooting in the rain at the W. Regional, I have to comment on the box parts. Have you thought about a way to get water to drain? Maybe remove the front of the area where the long guns are stored... Or make it so it can slide in and out. Also, maybe place drain holes in the corners of the box in front. I never plan on shooting in the rain anymore. However, you are somewhat stuck with what you get at an annual match. Have fun! Allie Mo

Seriously, I hadn't thought about drain holes, but I believe I can come up with something. A couple of holes drilled through the bottom ought to work. that should work. russ I'll let ya know! Looks good, now go break it in and have some fun. Thanks, I have a feeling it is going to be a loooong winter waiting for spring and shooting time. DocWard
So, what have I learned from this project? First, that you don't need top notch woodworking skills to make one. As long as you know your way safely around tools, and have a basic concept of what you are planning, you can build one. I got to thinking about it, and all joking aside, I can't remember having done any other wood working projects since wood shop in Junior High. This one won't win any prizes for looks up close, but it isn't bad either, and it should get the job done. Second, that doing it yourself can be cheaper than buying new. However, if you find a good deal on a used cart, it may be the better option. Mingo Frank offered me a good price on a cart and I was going to take it, but after talking to Dirty Chris and having some challenges making schedules line up, I opted to make my own. I should have waited and gone with the used one, it was a better deal, money-wise. I might have been able to squeeze one out for less if I hadn't had delusions of grandeur. Having said that, there is a certain level of pride in doing it yourself. Third, having a solid plan and being realistic about your needs and abilities go a long way. Follow the KISS principle, unless you know you have the ability to follow through. Finally, I can't say well it is going to work. I think it will work fine. My biggest concerns are with the box and the front leg. The box may be a bit weak for ammo. I will need to put it in place then put the ammo in, and vise versa at the end of the day. The front leg seems to be a bit wobbly to me, but I got a number of comments about three legs being more stable on gravel than four. I have the ability to modify it, or even start over if I choose, with just the cart. I don't see that happening though.
DocWard
Thought I would add a few pictures of the box that will go at the front. Picked it up at Hobby Lobby and my oldest daughter did the black paint. It should be big enough for ammo, snacks, etc... Since it has no lock, I will need to carry the ammo to and from shoots in an actual ammo box, but that isn't a problem. If it doesn't hold up, then I will find one of the old fashioned wooden ammo boxes. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1150.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1151.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff295/DocWard_album/IMG_1152.jpg
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001
Hey Doc On the front leg , I would suggest that you run a 2x ? , whatever the height is to make it level, then put a 45deg wedge on both ends . When I did my first cart I built it that way , still holding up after 6 yrs lots of BIg folks have set on it , and it ain;t broke yet , BTW it stays in the carport when not in use . I do need to repaint it , relly like the brown you used , sharp CB

I read somewhere that three points of contact tended to be easier to steady on rocks and rough ground than four. I hadn't really planned on using it as a seat with the box I have, but who knows what may happen!
Chickasaw Bill SASS #70001
Doc I had not planned for it to be a seat eather , until a guy that was about 325 dicided it was , It was one of our older shooters . it held with out the end braces , but I added them just to make sure . It is still a 3 point contact but you have a bigger surface to work with . I think I will repaint my big cart , it rolls better than the other cart I have . Grizzly Dave
I put two preassure treated 2x4s under my box / cart. I figured if it was gonna support my fatness, it needed to be sturdy. LINK
DocWard
I might take a look at it. It wouldn't be much work to add something underneath to brace. a few minutes with tape measure, table saw, drill and screws. I still have the wood I could use.
