Two Shoots Posted October 23 Share Posted October 23 Kudos and shout out to the Illiowa Regulators for a great Buffalo Shoot. The range facility is spectacular, the shooting was fun, challenging, and entertaining, and the host & match director could not have been more helpful and accommodating. If you're into long range cowboy shooting, try to make it out there sometime because this match is a hoot! Two Shoots Posted October 24 Author Share Posted October 24 The distances were 150 to 300 yds. The buffalos are different sizes ranging from approx. 18"w x 12"t to 36"w x 24"t, so it's designed to simulate shooting full size buffalos at 600+ yds. There were 3 "herds" of 12 buffalos with one in each herd being very small. 3 shooters fire at a time, with each getting 5 minutes to get off 12 shots. Each shooter gets a chance at each herd for a total of 36 shots for the day. We'll be holding Buffalo Shoots on Saturday, May 17, Sunday, July 27, and Saturday, October 18, 2025. Also, Match Director Dolittle B. Ernest is planning to do something a little different at the May match: Shooters will engage the traditional buffalo herds twice at the 300-yard distances described above, then for the third round of shooting all shooters will move to the 600-yard berm and stationary targets at 600 yards. More information will be forthcoming, but if you like this kind of shooting, be sure to mark the dates on your calendar and make your way to the Quad Cities. We will be posting updates on our website www.illowairregulars.com. Dolittle is quickly turning Illowa Irregulars' Buffalo Shoot into one of the best in the upper Midwest. The match combined with ease of travel, along with plenty of very nearby places to stay if you're from out of town, makes this a great match to put on your calendar in 2025. I asked the same question regarding a 38-55 lever gun and this was the response from the Match Director: "You can use 1894 or 1886 lever guns. There are other shooters that use them with success. The real issue is our targets are meant for big bullets like the 45-70. We have a few shooters that use 40-65's, they don't always knock them down. Your 38-55 depending on bullet weight would knock over our smaller buffalo with no problem. Our buffalos weigh between 20lb and 70lb. Hope this answers your questions." My daughter used a 38-55 loaded with a 335 grain head and as much 777 as I could get in the case ( about 40-45 grains). She could knock them down if she hit them in the upper half.
