Bad Bascomb, SASS # 47,494 Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 First two stages of today's match had me wondering..... Rifle felt... odd. Had to hammer 4 of 10 shots , some twice, in order to get ignition. Figured I'd add a washer as a spacer and solve the problem, at least for remaining 4 stages. No washer to be found in all my goody boxes. What to do? Inspiration struck as I drank some water---the cap from the bottle could be worked easily with my Swiss Army knife. A little flimsy, but it improved things drastically for stage 3--- no more failure to fire when trigger is pressed. THEN true enlightenment dawned as I noticed one of the many spent 12 gauge wads laying about the area. Just trimming off the base and doing a bit of forming created a 3x thicker and much more robust spacer. A little stiffer lever feel, but total reliability returned and brought needed confidence with it. Reminded me of a favorite saying of our race bike tuner: "Nothing is more permanent than a temporary repair". I WILL be properly fixing the problem now that we are home.....
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted August 18, 2024 Posted August 18, 2024 Good job! Now, go find a few #10 AN washers
Abilene, SASS # 27489 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Well, I gotta say, I tried this on my '73 and it didn't work AT ALL! In fact, it jammed it up good. So, you know, YMMV.
Rip Snorter Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Shot a lot of matches in different disciplines down the decades, can only recall one failure, with an '03 A3. The rifle worked, the foreign military ammunition did not. Can't imagine going to any kind of a match without giving the gun / guns a complete going over. Could have been worse, a carry gun in a desperate situation.
