Musical question by student

Recommended Posts

Grandson Dominic age 8 and 10 months seems to have a musical bent, learning multiple instruments at the same time. It’s not from me, I can’t even toe tap. My daughter makes sure he has teachers who pay attention during his lessons.

So while learning violin, teacher put two blue tapes on the neck of the violin for where his bow should be.  He asked why he couldn’t have more blue tapes.

Teacher said “because then you’ld have a guitar.”

He wants a cello.

That's what Grandpas are for.

Our oldest granddaughter took to the violin at age six, now teaching orchestra in elementary school.  We contributed to violins and bows over the years.

There can be worse interests.

Guitars have frets which are half steps apart. Violins don’t have them, you have to find the exact spot on the neck for a particular note or notes. The tape is just a temporary learning tool for your grandson. Good idea, sounds like he has a good teacher.

Putting tape on the neck for where his finger should be makes sense. But when did you start bowing a violin on the neck?

You’re right, You don’t bow on the neck you bow on the strings down by the sound board just above the bridge.

On a guitar you finger on the neck and play on the body.

On a stand-up bass you finger on the neck and play on the body.

I thought on a violin you fingered on the neck and played on the body.

Why would you play on the neck? I've seen people pick the strings on the neck, but bowing the strings, whenever I've seen someone playing a fiddle, is done on the body.
