H. K. Uriah, SASS #74619
If I recall correctly, "BAMM" stands for Bolt Action Military (rifle) Match. I've been to a couple of larger shoots that held a BAMM, and was very happy to be able to take out my Krag. I noticed that the most popular rifle seemed to me the 1903 Springfield. Makes perfect sense. A random thought occurred to me this morning. Would it be feasible to pair the used rifle with the appropriate pistol that would have been issued with it? We pretty much all know what rifles would theoretically be useable in a BAMM match, and it is not to hard to think of what kind of a sidearm would logically be paired with them. Depending on how it was done, there would perhaps need to be two "categories," revolver and early auto loading pistol. Course of fire could be very simple and straight forward. File it all under "More shooting + more guns = more fun." Just a random thought.
Abe E.S. Corpus SASS #87667
I understand that in the early years of Wild Bunch side matches that at least some clubs allowed a variety of pistols and revolvers of the era (approximately 1913). When WBAS became a real discipline with its own Handbook, the only legal pistol was a .45 ACP 1911. The explanation I heard was that having one pistol made it easier to maintain safety and consistency than with different types of pistols. Only one “Manual of Arms” to learn and to watch. Once the game evolved beyond limiting the 1911 magazine to five rounds I think incorporating revolvers became that much harder.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Attend a match where they are shooting Doughboy side match. That usually combines the 1911 and a BAMM type rifle. (Too late, it's already been done.) But, the logistics of having to bring along a different handgun than the 1911, and the rather unreliable performance of other WW I era handguns, would make anything but the 1911 a significant problem. Doughboy participation is not all that large as it is. Asking this on the WB forum would be more appropriate, of course. good luck, GJ
