45/70 Nitro Loads

Major Crimes

Recommended Posts

So I am still playing around with some nitro loads until I get the time and inclination to go to the Darkside.

This one seems to be my best so far and holds it together til around 600 and then the funny stuff starts.

The pic is the 200M target, 10 rounds.

Its a 535gr proj with 22gr of 2205 (Aussie powder similar to 5744). The rifle is a Pedersoli Boss Sharp's with Lee Shaver rear sight.

Not bad at all-Well centered and a fairly round cluster.

Make sure the back of the forearm, is not touching the front of the rec'r.

Can you Find Unique powder?

OLG

Thanks for the tip, I will check.

The availability of overseas powders can be hot and cold, what do you recommend?

If you can find Unique, and it doesn't cost an arm and leg. Get it.......

I like it much more than 5744.

Try 14.0-14.5gn of Unique with a firm roll crimp.

I have run .14.5 gn of Unique, with a 535 gn Lyman Postell and it shot pretty well in my Shiloh with a 1/18 ROT bbl.

Start at 14.0 and 'listen' to your 200 M targets.

What alloy are your bullets? I run 30:1(lead/tin).

The proj are commercial made, and I am unsure of the mix.

They dont make them anymore so once I run out I will start casting my own.

How do you do when you back up, to maybe 20 feet?

just pullin’ Yer leg there, nice shooting.

Its a 34" barrel so 20' tends to tighten up the group nicely:P

Believe me, no one was as surprised as I was by that groupB)

For my money, it's just evil to load heathen smoky-less in a .45/70.

I keep telling everyone "smokeless" is a fad and I give it another 100+ years tops:rolleyes:

$50 a lb (35 USD) which is about the same as the local made powder.

It looks like it comes and goes but I will keep my eye out for some.

cheers
