Also shooting 17 and 22 mag in same gun

Recommended Posts

I was researching about the 17 and 22 mag to see which is better and found an article that said that you can shoot them out of the same gun due to diameter. That doesn't seem right to me or at least must both be out of the magnum rifle but the 17 surely would be unstable in the barrel.   Any thoughts?

Of course you can shoot them both out of the same gun. All the 17 is is a 22 necked down. It would be like shooting 38/40 out of a 44/40. You can do it. The accuracy sucks, but you can do it.

Shoot? Yes.

Hit? Probably not.

I work at LGS, one day a gentlemen brought in a Savage bolt action that he thought was chambered in 22 lr. He was complaing that it would jam, accuracy was poor, and a 22 cleaning rod would not fit in the bore. I looked it over and saw on the barrel it was chmbered in 17 HMR and told him that was the problem. He got a strange look on his face (probably felt like a fool). So he bought the correct anmmo and I never saw him again.
