Chili Ron Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 Howdy, I bought a decorative windmill and lately with all the wind I keep getting comments about it generating electricity. The company that makes the windmills has no such generators. Any ideas on making such a toy and how much it might put out? Best CR
Charlie Plasters, SASS#60943 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 The Windcharger Co, later Dynatechnology of Sioux City Iowa made units for windmills . I don't know if they are still around but that was their bread and butter for decades.
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 How big is the decorative windmill?
Chili Ron Posted March 15, 2019 Author Posted March 15, 2019 Howdy, 8 ft tall. They are on ebay but I got one at the local Farm and Fleet. It takes a good while to assemble but simple tools. If anyone wants to put one up, forget the pins that come with it. Use those curly stakes for dog chains. Much more stable. Best CR
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 8 ft tall, blades maybe 1.5 ft long?
irish ike, SASS #43615 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 12 volt alternator with a fan belt, tied to a charge controller then an inverter or battery storage, batteries to an inverter. You tube it. There are a bunch of homemade windmill electrical generators on there usng alternators. Ike
Trailrider #896 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 And as soon as you get it assembled, representatives from PETA will be at your door complaining about all the birds you are potentially killing with it!
Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted March 15, 2019 Posted March 15, 2019 There is a story about Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. He bought a large parcel of land on a hill. PSNH wanted thousands of $$ to run poles to his house. He put in a windmill. PSNH was then required to buy any surplus power generated and put in his poles for free.
Chili Ron Posted March 16, 2019 Author Posted March 16, 2019 Howdy, Marshal, you have just made my day. Best CR
