Widder, SASS #59054
In the movie "The Alamo" (the one with John Wayne and Richard Widmark), there is a scene that shows the Mexican flag flying at the Alamo while the American defenders are occupying it. This is before the battle starts. Its the same flag as the Mexican army is flying with green, white and red vertical bars. The flag at the Alamo has "1824" in the while section. Was the same type flag flown at the Alamo? ..........Widder
Widder, SASS #59054
Well, after reading info on Google, I can understand it a little better. BUT, I submit to the well learned SASS pards to share a better knowledge and understand about this being in the Hollywood movie. Thanks ..........Widder
Utah Bob #35998
Rousing movie though it may be, there are many many inaccuracies in The Alamo. Quote In the annals of warfare it is hard to imagine braver words than those of Colonel William Barret Travis in his letter of 24 February 1836. In the faceof certain death he wrote, “our flag still waves proudly from our walls — Ishall never surrender or retreat.” Unfortunately, Colonel Travis never left us with a description of his flag Letter from William Barret Travis to General Sam Houston and the Government ofTexas, 24 Feb. 1836, in George A. McAlister,Alamo: The Price of Freedom(San Antonio:Docutex, Inc., 1988), 160–61. New Orleans Greys Flag.
Trailrider #896
Different movie, but another movie mistake: In "Cheyenne Autumn", there is a brief scene showing a clear blue sky...except for the presence of contrails in the sky! Guess they just couldn't justify re-shooting the scene!
Tres Equis 20371
It's not a continuity error - the 1824 flag was flown during the Texas war of independence 1824 refers to the Mexican constitution of 1824. In 1835, Mexico all but repealed the 1824 constitution and changed the laws of the land - among them was the abolition of slavery. Americans in Texas didn't much like the new Mexican constitution, and it was one of the reasons that Texas broke free. but the flag at the Alamo also could have been the green/white/red tricolor with 2 stars in the center, and not 1824 there are also reports that a blue flag with a white star in the center was displayed in Travis' HQ and the flag of the New Orleans Grays was captured at the Alamo and taken to Mexico City with Travis' HQ records (which were taken intact) but nobody really knows for sure what flag flew over the Alamo
Widder, SASS #59054
It would be reasonable to think that 'Colonel Travis would have only flown the flag of the army of which he was a Colonel. Do you think? Out of curiosity, what was the actual Army of which he was a Colonel? ..........Widder
Smoky Pistols
Actually, the defenders of the Alamo were not Americans. They were Mexican citizens attempting to liberate themselves from what they considered a tyrannical government in Mexico.

Besides those who held Mexican citizenship, there were many Americans there. http://aycocklaw.com/files/26_WIKI_LIST_OF_DEFENDERS_OF_THE_ALAMO_1.pdf
Widder, SASS #59054
Dang, looks like about 34 were listed from Tennessee. I knew it was a campfire full, but I didn't know the actual number. ..........Widder
