MizPete
Machine made? They used to do this by hand. At the risk of opening a biiiiiiiiiiiiig can of worms, it's called faggoting.

From my admittedly limited knowledge of techniques, faggoting was most often used to join pieces of fabric rather than being pulled thread work. But, I guess that any time you bundle threads like that, be it in pulled thread or stitching pieces together it's faggoting. An aside. Back in my SCA days I knew a guy who, in his own words, was a flamer, favored very elaborate and flamboyant Landsknecht outfits. Hand stitched. If he had had the time and money I think he would have woven the cloth himself. He always included faggoting in his outfits, and made endless puns about it. Sedalia Dave
I'm amazed the machine didn't jam when it was moving along the thread and not actually stitching anything.
