Charlie Harley, #14153
At this time last year, east Tennessee was making national news for the devastating wildfires that seemed to be consuming Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountain National Park. Last weekend I hiked through some of the burn area and was amazed at the new growth coming back. Even the hardwoods whose trunks were charred black had new shoots coming from the root balls. #SmokiesStrong! A panorama of Cove Mountain Trail. Gatlinburg is just over the ridge to the left. A charred maple tree with new shoots coming from the still-alive root ball. I'm in a little rough patch of my own at the moment, but these trees gave me a shot of encouragement that was beyond words. Amen to that. Looking at the damage from the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens and my fishing trip a few years later. The scars were still there, but the new growth was amazing. Renewal is a wonderful thang.
