my son got snake with a Heritage 22

At my house we have several acres to cut and I have run up on King snakes (which I love and do my best to give them free reign.) and copperheads and water moccasins and a diamond back rattler while cutting grass with my tractor so I usually carry a pistol of some sort(i saw the moccasin the one time i did not have one so make sure i do from now on) so my 12 year old was tasked with cutting the back yard that had not been cut in 3 weeks due to my hand surgery that is better now.  the grass was tall having gotten good rain from Harvey and other storms.  He asked if he could carry the Heritage 22 I just bought and had him practice with so I loaded it with snake shot and he put it in a covered holster to keep it clean.  I make my way near him and he waves to me so I go to him and low and behold there is a dead snake with no head and no other injuries on the ground.  Its colors were very similar to the Timber Rattler I killed near the church with the handle on a duster for ceiling fans.  It was a baby so it did not have a rattle so I need to find out how old they are before they get a rattle in case it is something else.  He made sure the mower was off and the blades disengaged before he fired as he told me on his own how hard it was shutting everything down first and still get a shot off.  He keeps mentioning how it is his pistol.  evidently he likes it.
