German Jim
How does one go about matching a bullet to a barrel twist rate? Are there other parameters involved? Things such as powder type, brand of brass, brand of primers, type of bullet, shape of bullet? I'm sure the weight of the bullet is critical. I'm thinking of a .45-70 with a lead bullet and Black Powder and a 28" to 30" barrel if that means anything. Also a .45-70 with lead bullet and smokeless. Just curious for future reference. Rex M Rugers #6621
Simplest answer to your question , if you are talking about a 45-70 single shot , are looking to use bullets up to 500 grs. , you can get by very well with a 1-18 twist. For heavier bullets you might be better served with a 1-16 twist. The slower twist rates , 1-20 , that is used in lever rifles , is for the shorter 405 gr. and lighter bullets. The Original Lumpy Gritz
A 1/18 ROT is the std for SS .45 cal rifles these days. I have no issues with 540gn lead @ 1350 fps pushed by real BP. OLG
