Bullett Sass 19707
I am putting a stock and forearm on my 1889 marlin. What type of finish would it have when it was new? I also need a forearm cap and don't find it at numeric where else could I look. Thanks Bullett 19707
Doc Fill 'Em 67797
Boiled linseed oil finish on the stocks. Check Ebay for the forend cap or might be able to modify a newer one to work.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708
Linspeed stock finish gives you the look and feel of BLO, but dries more quickly (has drying accelerators added). If you got the time, BLO will be truly authentic. Good luck, GJ
Nate Kiowa Jones #6765
Just use Birchwood-Casey Tru-oil. It'd basically triple boiled linseed oil with an accelerator so it will dry quicker. (without the accelerator linseed can take days to dry). It's easy but kinda messy the way I do it. I just rub it on by hand. Pour some on your hand and rub into t5he wood until you feel it warming slightly. Next day you should be able to 4/0 steel wool it and add another coat. just do this until you get the sheen you want This old marlin got it.
