Nellie Blue #54399
Some non-CAS friends from work are traveling to the New Orleans area and they're trying to find someplace to play tourist between Baton Rouge and New Orleans...here's the message they sent me... I am trying to find someone who is very familiar with New Orleans to find out where a safe, affordable, clean and centrally located area would be to stay – and we are flying blind! We don’t want to stay on Bourbon Street and, in fact, we're really preferring to stay in a small town somewhere between New Orleans and Baton Rouge that would feel more small town - like Natchitoches felt…..somewhere where we’d feel safe if we walked from our hotel in the evening to a restaurant for dinner. Do you know anything about that area or do you know anyone we could talk to that is really familiar with the area? Anyone have any great ideas? Chief Rick
Two years ago my wife and I stayed at the Hyatt Place in Baton Rouge just off of I-55 on Bluebonnet Blvd. It was, at the time, a nice economical place to stay - nothing fancy but safe and within walking distance of several restaurants. We would stay there again. Ralph & Kacoo's is right next door and was great. A little pricey but more than satisfying. Hope this helps.
Krazy Kajun
Ponchatoula is on I-12 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans where I-55 and I-12 intersect. Its an interesting little town with anitique stores and local charm. My in-laws live there and we always enjoy that area. If you HAVE to do the New Orleans tourist thing you might try staying in one of the burbs closeby and driving into town every day.

Nate Kiowa Jones #6765
Hi Nellie, Tell them to look at Donaldsonville just south of IH 10 and not that far from N.O. or where IH 55 hits IH 10. If they go touring south of Donaldsonville they can make the Plantations along the river road.

Nellie Blue #54399
My Dad used to buy all his Fords there cuz my cousin was married the the dealer! We used to go for lunch to a Plantation and drank our (sweet) tea out of Mason jars (before that was cool)! I think that'll be my recommendation to them. Thanks! See ya! Maybe not til next March, but I'll sure see ya somewhere!

Nellie Blue #54399
OK...one more time for a little extra info...I got this from them today after I passed this info along... ...most of the hotels for Madisonville and Mandeville are in Covington. Is that a nice town? When I shot in Covington 6 years ago, I stayed at a RV park out in the boonies so I don't really remember the town...does anyone have any favorite hotels they stay at in Covington? pony racer # 39210
Nellie, I stayed at a hotel just outside of covington when i was down there after Katrina, the cool thin was that it was like halfway between the highway and the little old town area. I am pretty sure it was a Days Inn. It was nice clean and had inside doors. I need to get down that way one of these days soon it has been too long... Okie Sawbones, SASS #77381
My in-laws live in the Hammond, Ponchatoula, and Covington area. The Covington clan says if they were visiting Covington, they would stay at the Country Inn & Suites, FWIW. The Hammond bunch say they'd only stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites in Hammond. The Ponchatoula gang said there is only one B&B worth staying in, but it is usually booked ahead of time.

Fairshake
Tell them to stay in the Covington, Mandeville,Madisonville areas. They will love the walks along the lake on this side. They only have to take the Toll Causeway to go into the City. The areas that I just named are much safer than any place in the city at night. They will find several antique shops and if they chose the Abita Beer Company is close at Abita Springs. About a 1 hour drive East will put you on the Mississippi coast Casino Boats with Las Vegas type acts. From some one who lives here and has enjoyed the life for many years.
