Blackhawk,

dont forget to test your crimp.

1. Mark a round.

2. Measure the OAL of your 'marked' round.

3. load the 'marked' round plus 5 more unmarked rounds into your chambers.

4. Fire the 5 'Unmarked' rounds.   DON'T FIRE THE 'MARKED' ROUND

5. Pull the marked round and measure the OAL.

A .003-.004 bullet movement (Increase in OAL)  within the cannelure is not critical and basically confirms a

sufficient crimp for those hot rounds.

If your crimp is sufficient, you could possibly put that marked round back in the pistol and fire more rounds without

the marked round showing more than .001 movement.

Good luck.   Wish I were there!

Pay attention to Widder's advice here!

I have a story about the first .454 Casull loads I made for a bear hunt that did not have enough crimp on the bullets...

When the bullets back out and lock up the cylinder when you fire the first round I hope you are wearing brown pants. For some strange reason, bears are not willing to stand by whilst you try to "unstick" your revolver to take another shot at them. And Freedom Arms revolvers do not disassemble as easily as a Colt SAA or Ruger single action.

YEEEEHAWW!!

Just received a message that my new rifle will arrive at the FFL on Monday!!

It’ll probably be Tuesday, ‘cause it’s coming FedEx and they’re usually a day or two late.  I might get to put a couple rounds through it before I get surgicalized!!  😎

Just got back from my family Christmas party up at my mother’s.

Little brother and I swapped information on the .454 Blackhawk.  The .454 cylinder WILL fit into the regular Blackhawk frame. It will NOT time up. That will require either a different pawl, (we didn’t go any deeper into the internals) or perhaps a different hammer with a different pivot point for the pawl to hinge on.

The cylinder also requires a larger base pin. The frame would have to be drilled or the cylinder would need to be bushed.

Like I said in one of the previous posts on the thread, this particular revolver is a Ruger special production, built for Lipsey’s, so some of this may not be true for the regular production .454 gun, but I suspect that it’s indicative of what might be required to make the conversation.

Very likely not worth the effort or expense when you can buy a .454 Casual Blackhawk over the counter.

I didn’t get a chance to try the new loads today. There were things that needed doing at mom’s house, so I pitched in on the work.

Might slip over to the other shop tomorrow or Monday and rattle off a few rounds, or wait and try out my new rifle at the same time.

Some of your hot .45 Colt loads in your rifle will probably equal or exceed .454 Casull loads in your brothers revolver.

If you can chronograph your 'stuff', let us know how it performed.

I don’t have immediate access to a chronograph.  If I get down to Willy McCoy’s place anytime soon, I’ll see if we can set his up and check some rounds.

Might be, I’ll invest in one when my rich uncle gets out of the poor house!!

Call your rich 'cousin in law' and tell him what you need.   Just call the local DQ in Murfreesboro to find him.
