Cimarron 1894 38-55 questions

I have just ordered a Cimarron 1894 in 38-55.  I want to use the rifle for some SASS long range matches and for some hunting.  I have some experience shooting BPCR silhouette matches with a 1874 45-70 so I have worked up a load before.   First of does anyone else use this rifle?  What kind of sights do you have on it?  I am looking for a tang sight and would rather not spend hundreds of dollars on a Soule type sight if I don't have to.  Does a Marbles tang sight do the job?  Anyone know where to get one for a pistol grip 94?   What are the usual distances for these types of matches?

My local club doesn't shoot these matches so I might have to drive to find one.  I am in Lagrange Georgia so I have to drive to find anything.

I plan to use smokeless powder first, that's what I use in my Marlin 45-70.

Any advice from anyone that has used this rifle and shot these matches is welcome.

I have a Winchester 1894 Legendary

Frontiersman in 38-55. I absolutely love the rifle and the caliber. Mine just has standard buckhorn sights. Although I haven't shot it in a SASS long range match, I have shot it in a Big Bore shoot at my local club, 25 to 200 yards, numerous times winning a few matches with it. I shoot a 262 grain, .379 diameter lead bullet with gas check, and IMR4895 powder. You will enjoy shooting it!

"Long range" differs greatly from range to range. One range I shoot LR side matches at has plates at three distances out to 500 yards (250,400,500, I think...) for single shot, and two distances for lever action rifle cal - 100ish and 250. Another range has three progressively smaller plates all set at 240ish, I think...

Like High Spade, I also use a Legendary Frontiersman .38-55 with a Lyman #2 tang sight, which works fine for close up targets at one or two distances - I set the factory sight for 100 yards and the Lyman for 250, Easy Peasy. For more targets at differing ranges, I use a Marlin 1895CB .45-70 with an MVA Soule tang sight and a bubble level front globe. There is often a time limit, and referring to your sight notes, turning the sight up, getting back on target again, and shooting at 4 targets at 4 ranges will often eat up my ten minutes for ten shots before I can get them all off.

I have a Cimmaron 94 in 38-55. I’ve used it for “Cody -Dixon” matches that are offered at many Texas clubs. Shoot rifle targets 50-80 yds. Pistols & shotgun are the same as regular match.
I shoot mine with a 250 grn bullet with 9.6 grns Unique. Sight wise I just use the buckhorn. With some practice it’s good to 100 or 150. Much further than that a marbles peep sight will serve you better.
I don’t hunt, but if I did I’d feel very comfortable out to 75 yds with just the buckhorn.
I prefer the starline short 38-55 brass for lever, and the long 38-55 for my highwall.
38-55 is a great round. Certainly deer or even elk capable.
