WST 45 Load Data

Recommended Posts

Anybody tried WST in Cowboy 45 Special with the 130gr barnstormers or 160gr bullets?

Also in 45 Colt rifle with 160gr or 180gr bullets?

I'm looking for a good starting point for cowboy shooting. I'm currently using Red Dot but I'm eventually going to run out and who knows if/when Alliant will start selling powders again. I have an ok supply of WST for Wild Bunch but I don't shoot enough WB to burn through it.

In Cowboy .45 Special cases, I run 4.2 grains of WST and a 175 grain bullet.  Nice load.  Lower charge gets sooty.

In .45 Colt, I run about 6.0 grains of WST with a 200 grain slug and that makes right at 150 power factor in  my 20" rifle.  Lighter and I get a lot of sooting of the cases and some blow back from the chamber.

good luck, GJ

It's not wst, but I load 4gn

titegroup under a 160 gn head works great.

Picked up a bill English carrier for my daughter and mine rifles so one load for both rifle and pistol.

I experimented with 180 gn heads but there was a noticeable difference in recoil for my daughter.

Hope this helps.

What velocities are you getting? I thought WST would be a titch hotter than Red Dot. I'm running 5.5gr with 180gr bullet in my 18" rifle and it's just barely over the 150PF for old WB rules.

With C45S I'm running 4.0gr of Red Dot behind the 130gr bullets. If you are running 175's and I want to run 130's it usually means I have to run more powder but maybe yours are going much faster than I'm hoping to achieve. I'm running a PF around 92 with the Red Dot.

Thanks! I should probably try Titegroup while I'm at it. It still seems to be easy to find.

I shoot WST in my .45 Bullseye gun.  I tried it in my C.45 Spl.  Didn't have very good luck with it. Seemed to be position sensitive, which never made much sense to me.

Usually that is from trying to go with too light a load.  Beef it up.  But, yep, I also use BE in C45S and it's nice, too.

Regarding my velocities - well, you can back calculate Velocity because I gave you PF and Bullet Weight.  ;)

Touche! But what about with C45S?

WST is quite a bit slower burn rate powder than Red Dot.  In reloading, "hotter" is not a very well defined term.   Typical loads with WST require a little more weight of powder than do Red Dot cartridge load at same velocity, but they come in fairly close.

Just a couple of test loads will tell you much more than I can by writing.....and it's pretty safe because we typically are loading to very low pressures for SASS matches.

good luck, GJ
