Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984 Posted February 19, 2024 Posted February 19, 2024 On December 24, 1914, Captain Arthur O'Sullivan of the British Army's Royal Irish Rifles was stationed in Rue du Bois, France He heard a German voice float from across the battlefield: "Do not shoot after 12 o'clock and we will not do so either... If you English come out and talk to us, we won't fire." One Irish rifleman ventured out of his trench to test the invitation. After returning safely with a German cigar as a gift, others made their way onto the quiet battlefield and No Man's Land filled with soldiers meeting each other halfway. And so began the unofficial Christmas truce of 1914.
Trailrider #896 Posted February 19, 2024 Posted February 19, 2024 IIRC, the late Bill Mauldin had a cartoon where Willie says to Joe, "The Krauts don't sound so good on Silent Night. D'ya think somethi' happened to their tenor?"
Seldom Seen #16162 Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 W.W.1 or The Great War as it was called never made much sense as well as the United States entering it. Imagine how much different the future would have been if we had entered the war for Germany.
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619 Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 Why would we have done that? To help conquer France...?
