Father Kit Cool Gun Garth
In a recent Post by https://forums.sassnet.com/index.php?/topic/358396-does-anyone-know-the-shelf-life-of-sterno/ the following response was made. This got me thinking about my time at Lackland AFB, Texas for Basic Military Training. I was advised by one of the new guys on how to better make my boots shine for inspections. Instead of just rubbing the shoe polish on the boots and then polishing them, I was instructed to set the shoe polish on fire. Then take the melted shoe polish and put it on the boots. This enables it to soak deep into the boot surface. Once dry, then polish the boot. Was I surprised at how much shinier they were. Here's the best part. We weren't suppose to let the TI know we were doing this. One morning while lighting the shoe polish, our lookout gave the warning that the TI was approaching. In a rush, and without thinking it through, I blew the flame on the shoe polish out! Wet shoe polish got splashed all over the wall in the barracks! Lesson learned. Always put the lid on to snuff out the flame. 2
Trailrider #896
Used to spread Kiwi on the shoes/boots, lit it with a match or Zippo lighter and then blow it out. Then spit shine!
Alpo
I'm just glad he specified IN THE FLAT TINS. Can't you visualize somebody with a bottle of kiwi liquid trying to set it on fire to shine his boots?
