But in the history of Europe , about Middle Ages, Poland was a major force especially later in 1683 when John III Sobieski led Polish troops to the gates of Vienna and rescued the Holy Roman Empire from the Turks, saving Europe for Christianity. Because around that time, while at it's peak, the Polish -Lithuanian Commonwealth was 1/3 of the European landmass and fielded a formidable army.
