Trailrider #896
Maj. (ret) Brian Shul was shot down in Viet Nam, and severely burned. Told by doctors, he'd never fly again, he underwent agonizing treatments, and eventually flew the SR-71 Blackbird. He and his backseater were the ones involved in the "Speed Check" event. For those who don't know, a Cessna 172 called LA Center for a speed check over the ground. This was followed by someone in a light twin, who was one-upping the Cessna. That was followed by a military jet requesting a speed-over-the-ground reading. Major Shul heard the mike click in his phones, as his backseater requested a speed check. When LA Center replied "1495", his partner replied, "We make it about 1500!" Of course, nobody could top that! End of radio traffic on that subject! Maj. Shul was 75. RIP, Sir! Thanks for your perserverance and service! | | |
The Original Lumpy Gritz
Had the pleasure of meeting him at Blackbird Park in PMD many years ago. Fantastic story teller, and a genuinely kind person who deeply loved this country!
