Seldom Seen #16162
I replaced the nipples on my new 1858 Remmie and have a holster. Ready to start shooting it this spring. My question is what size lead balls should I use for CAS? .457" shave a nice lead ring when seating them but they are hard to start. The manual lists .454" but I am concerned about them not fitting tight enough in the chamber and jumping forward under recoil which we know is a bad thing with BP. Count Sandor, SASS #74075
SS: .454 generally work out for me...however, I have one cylinder (bought used) that has a couple of odd sized chambers that will allow the ball to move forward with recoil from the powder charge I use, & almost cost me a match last year. The .454's seem generally easier to find, so I'd say experiment to see if its a problem before you engage in actual competition. If the .457's are that hard to start, the .454's are probably fine unless you're planning on using heavy loads. CS
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933
Depends on the brand. Pietta is usually .451, Uberti .454 and Ruger .457.
Lazarus Longshot, SASS #44254 Life
I use .454 in my Pietta '58 Remingtons. Shaves a lead ring every time, and I've never had the balls shift during firing.
