1868-William F. Cody joins the 5th Cavalry as Chief of Scouts.

 

1871-While addressing a disturbance of 50 cowboys in Abilene, Kansas, Sheriff Wild Bill Hickok accidentally shoots and kills his friend, Mike Williams, then kills Texas cowboy Phil Coe, whom he believed had started the row.

 

1877-Chief Joseph surrenders to Colonel Nelson Miles at Bear Paw Mountains. Little Wolf and a handful of braves escape to freedom in Canada.

 

1882-Frank James surrenders to Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden, six months after his brother Jesse was murdered.

 

1892-The Dalton gang hits the Coffeeville, Kansas bank of C.M. Condon & Company and First National Bank. Armed citizens kill 4, severely wound one. Only Emmet survived.

And Bill Doolin missed the robbery and battle because of a lame horse. (There is some controversy on this account.) Anyway, had he ridden in with the gang and been captured or killed, there might never have been a Wild Bunch.
