Subdeacon Joe
"Among the men who fought on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue" Admiral Chester Nimitz The battle for Iwo Jima began this week in 1945, 19 February to 26 March. A total of 27 Medals of Honor are received during the battle. Twenty two Marines and five Navy corpsmen receive the medal, of those 13 are posthumous. Also 200 Navy Crosses are earned. That is the Navy's second highest award for valor. Many of those probably should have been bumped up to MoH. The Marines would suffer heavy casualties during the battle 26000 with 6800 Killed in Action. Almost a third of it's attacking force would end up as wounded, missing, or killed in action.
